READING WORDS & IMAGES

For the second lecture of this module we turned our critical gaze to words and images. We discussed here the different types of achorage, the difference between denotation and connotation, and intertextuality. It was a very interesting lecture, I will recap the main elements below, along with my lecture notes.

Different types of anchorage:
This reading from Scott McCloud is a very simple explanation of the different types, and further explanation can be found in my lecture notes.

In the lecture we also discussed connotations and denotations which I found very interesting. Denotation looks at the primary meaning of an image, the initial, immediate reading, the literal deduction. Whereas connotation regards the secondary meaning, the triggered associations through the words and images included. I found a very useful video which I will link here. 

Also in the lecture we included a drawing and an analysis of the Treachery of Images (René Magritte). I found this a useful exercise, analysing the piece, noting the denotations and the connotations, then going further to look at the intertextuality. My analysis is attached at the bottom in my lecture notes.
